Open Mic

Last Wednesday, I went to the Open Mic Night at the Creative Jam. It’s an art studio in my very own hometown of Bristol. My good friend, Sharon Arsego told me about it at a Book Event back in June during my library talk. I was intrigued, but scheduling conflicts kept me from going as Open Mic Night only happens once a month. However, I made it a priority to go to one before they take a break for the holidays. There were thirteen other poets, authors, musicians, and artists who shared their talents on that night. Was made me anxious was I opened after the break once we got the halfway point. Let me tell you more about the thoughts flowing through my head.

Open Mic Night Was The Jam!

For context, I brought my first book Looked Down Upon: The Exiled Kin to read at The Open Mic Night. The phenomenal host, Tom said each individual should only go for five minutes that way the event didn’t run too late. I was torn on what I should read, given the time constraint. I wanted to read a short chapter, but quickly realized even that would take too long. Ultimately, I decided to read my grandma’s dedication which is my favorite page. As well as reading one page in the book that included a poem written by the main protagonist Luke Ramirez. It was a relief that my work was well received. I’m glad that I attended the Open Mic Night, I got to meet so many supportive and talented people. I look forward to going to the next Open Mic Night after the holidays in January.
